The consumer unit is the electrical hub of any installation. All cabling in your property ultimately runs back to this point, making it the central command for your home’s electricity.

Why Upgrading Matters



More than just a junction box, it is your primary safety device—the component that protects your family, property or business from electrical faults. It potentially saves lives and is arguably the most important part of any electrical installation.

Older consumer units that use rewireable fuses instead of modern Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) can pose serious safety risks. Rewireable fuses rely on manual replacement when they blow, which can lead to incorrect fuse ratings being used and a higher risk of fire. MCBs, by contrast, trip automatically under fault conditions, providing far more reliable protection.

Similarly, if your consumer unit lacks Residual Current Device (RCD) protection, it may not detect earth leakage currents that could cause fatal electric shocks. RCDs are designed to cut the power within milliseconds in the event of a fault, significantly improving safety.

A consumer unit without Surge Protection Device (SPD) protection leaves your installation and connected appliances vulnerable to voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes or electrical surges. This can result in costly damage or even render critical appliances unsafe. This is especially critical in commercial and business environments, where high-value data racks and IT equipment could be damaged or destroyed without SPD protection.

The material and construction of your consumer unit also matter. Units made of combustible materials (plastic or wooden consumer units) that contain ferrous components can exacerbate fire risk during a fault. Modern consumer units are typically non-ferrous and fire-resistant, helping to contain faults safely.

Professional Upgrades

Should you wish to upgrade your consumer unit, please note that all works are notified under the Part P building regulations, which we fully comply with. Upon completion of the work, you will receive a certificate verifying that the installation meets current safety standards.

These works typically take half a day to a full day to complete, ensuring full testing is carried out and the installation is safe to re-energize after the upgrade. Please note that the power must be fully isolated for the entire duration of the work to ensure safety.
